well i hadn't done something that had anything to do with the macabre in a long time. i wanted something that represented death and loss, but i didn't want it to be uber-grotesque. composition such as this would leave the viewer wondering what was happening in the rest of the scene. i like to let people make their own conclusions. this way, the picture is somewhat morbid, but beautiful at the same time.
